言語や文化の異なる学生同士が、授業内で意味ある交流（Meaningful Interaction）を通して相互理解を深めながら、他者を理解し、己を見つめなおし、新しい価値観を創造する学習体験を「国際共修」と呼びます。ただ単に同じ教室内で机を並べるだけではなく、グループワークやプロジェクトなどの協働を通して、多様性を受容しようとする姿勢を身に着け、また自分自身の価値観を見直す学習機会です。多文化社会のアメリカやオーストラリアでは、教育実践のみならず、このような多文化環境での切磋琢磨が異文化理解、自文化理解、視野の拡大、異文化コミュニケーション力の向上に効果的であるということが、数多くの研究で実証されています。
国際共修は、授業の性質や担当者により、学生間のインターアクションの頻度や授業形態が少しずつ異なります。この授業は、課題解決型プロジェクトを取り入れ、教室外にも学習フィールドを拡大して展開するため、国際共修の中でも特に多文化交流の要素が強く、また学習者が自らの学びにオーナーシップを見出すことに重きを置いた（Leaner-centered）のクラスです。先生の指示に基づき勉強を進めることに慣れている人は、最初は戸惑うかもしれません。しかし、多様な価値観やワークスタイルが入り混じる環境下でものを考え、行動を起こすことの重要さを学び、「自立した学習者」に成長する知的な喜びを感じてください。
グローバル化が進み、社会はますます複雑化します。育った環境も言語も文化も全く異なる人たちと協働・共生するためには、自分にとって「異」なるものにも耳を傾け、理解し、そして自分の考えもきちんとアウトプットできるグローバル人材としての資質、能力を身に着ける必要があります。そのきっかけをつかめる学習機会が「国際共修」なのです。
Intercultural Co-learning Class provides both international and Japanese students with opportunities to learn from each other through "meaningful interactions." Thematic discussions and collaborative projects by students with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds are built into the learner-centered lessons where different ways of thinking, values, and working-styles are respected. The intensive interactions across cultures enable students to gain deeper insights into their differences and similarities, reflect on their own cultures and identities, and reconstruct themselves. Leadership and teamwork are also important component of this class.
This co-learning class incorporates both problem-based and project-based learning. By planning and carrying out a project with people from diverse backgrounds, the students are also expected to learn different working styles, strategies, and ethics which are usually influenced by cultural as well as individual values.
As the world becomes more globalized and diversified, we need to be not only internationally minded but also equipped with skills to effectively work with people from different backgrounds. This co-learning class offers a platform where students can try out or practice their skills before entering the "real world."
