Bonding Through Shared Experience

As a faculty member at the Center for Culture and Language Education at Tohoku University, I work with the Global Learning Center leading Faculty-Led Programs (FLPs) abroad. These short-term programs allow students to travel to partner universities, experience life in another country, and learn through hands-on, thematic activities and fieldwork.

While abroad, students improve their English and intercultural communication skills. Moreover, they undergo remarkable personal growth. I am always inspired by the transformation that takes place from the moment we leave Japan to the day we return. Students push themselves outside their comfort zones by challenging their English, navigating unfamiliar situations, and engaging with the local students and community.

Equally powerful is the bond that forms among the group. Students who barely knew each other before departure often become incredibly close through shared challenges and discoveries. They support and encourage one another, creating a strong, united group that dives into new experiences.

For me, these programs are about more than language and culture. They’re about creating meaningful connections, building global awareness, and helping students discover new sides of themselves. Seeing their growth and friendship unfold in such a short time is what motivates me to continue leading these programs year after year.
