Division of Research in Higher Education

The Division of Research in Higher Education is composed of the Section of Admissions, the Section of Higher Education, the Section of International Education, and the Section of Student Career Support. It conducts surveys and research on all aspects of higher education including connections between high school and university, admission exams, education and learning activities, university faculty members, internationalization of education and career development. Based on these research results, each faculty member belongs to an operational organization covering the center of admission, institutional research, professional development, interdisciplinary studies and education, global learning, learning support, and career support. They develop a myriad of activities to improve the quality of education, and contribute to internationalization, in our university.

Division of Developmental Research in Education Programs

The Division of Developmental Research in Education Programs forms the basis of liberal arts and sciences education at Tohoku University, being composed of three sections: the Section of Humanities, Arts and Sciences, the Section of Natural Science, and the Section of Culture and Language. It does not only implement liberal education classes but also undertakes “development and practice of higher liberal arts and sciences education” including surveys, planning, and development of education programs and curricula, as well as developing the educational environment in cooperation with each section, division, center, and other concerned parties.

Division of Research in Student Support

This division consists of the Section of Clinical Medicine and the Section of Clinical Education, and the affiliated faculty members are mainly in charge of duties at the Student Health Care Center and the Center for Counseling and Disability Services respectively. It does not only perform individual counseling for students with physical or psychological problems, or any other troubles in university life but also provides support and problem-solving for issues such as harassment, and offers support for students with physical and development disabilities. It also champions environmental improvements, and conducts education and research related to clinical medicine and pedagogy.

Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences was established in April 2008 as the implementation of one idea to improve the quality of liberal arts and sciences education. It was integrated into the Institute for Excellence in Higher Education in April 2014. The institute is composed of the president-appointed extraordinary professors and special professors in liberal arts and sciences education. In the first-year student program, which is particularly important in liberal arts and sciences education, it creates classes to enhance the students’ motivation to learn, and plays a leading role in the reform of liberal arts and sciences education. In addition, it provides opportunities which differ from regular classes to students, through the co-hosting of special seminars in liberal arts and sciences education, and joint lectures by president-appointed extraordinary professors.
